Research #DAC2026

This is a recording from the DHIS2 Annual Conference 2026. Last year a special issue on DHIS2 in the journal Social Science and Medicine was launched at the DAC. This session follows up on that with a presentation of some key learnings from the many submitted research articles. A lingering challenge is how to learn from different fields, and conduct more interdisciplinary research to bring in unique perspectives. The session includes two new presentations, not covered by the special issue, to represent the main scientific fields related to DHIS2 research, namely informatics and health sciences. In the first, the concept of frugal digital innovation is used to analyse an alternative way for mini-EMRs in Ethiopia. In the second, we get the health sciences perspective, also from Ethiopia, on assessing implementation and effectiveness outcomes of a digital intervention for improving newborn and stillbirth data. This session then also showcases how qualitative and quantitative methods are applied for different research questions. We hope this will spur fruitful conversations on how different types of research, and disciplines, can complement each other in our research.
