Ali Al-Hamadi: Finding Identity Through Football After Displacement
Al-Hamadi was born in Iraq and grew up in the UK, shaped by a family history of displacement.
His early life carried the experience of starting over in a new country after his family were forced to leave everything behind. Football became part of his life from a young age, offering structure and direction.
Now representing Iraq at the 2026 World Cup, his journey reflects a return to identity and connection with his roots.
Football is more than a game. For displaced young people, access to sports can offer a lifeline and a chance to dream.
Ali is part of UNHCR’s Gamechanging Team, standing alongside other players whose lives were shaped by displacement.
