How Guards and Prisoners Studying Law Together is Transforming Justice in Kenya
"I am the bridge between the prisoners, the prison, and the judicial system," says Joseph Kariuki with pride. As an officer at Naivasha Maximum Security Command and a recent University of London law graduate, Joseph embodies the power of unlikely allies.
Once tasked with guarding the incarcerated community, he learned from those he was meant to protect. "One of the prisoners was my tutor in jurisprudence... I was his student. That changed my perspective," Joseph reflects. Now a trained paralegal, Joseph is using his legal knowledge to fight injustice shoulder to shoulder with the prison community. He demonstrates that even in an adversarial justice system, real change can happen when people from all sides unite in service to defend justice.
