Climate Leadership: Transforming waste and energy for a resilient future | UCAP CAI
In Nairobi, 20% of organic produce in city markets currently goes to waste due to inadequate cooling.
This video spotlights a game-changing pilot project at City Park Market: a 10-tonne solar-powered cold storage facility. Designed to provide sustainable refrigeration for 165 traders, this hybrid system tackles high electricity costs and grid unreliability while significantly reducing post-harvest losses.
Key project impacts:
Food security: Preserves fresh produce, saving an estimated 841 tonnes of food waste annually.
Clean energy: Powered by a 10kWp solar system with real-time digital monitoring to ensure reliability even on cloudy days.
Emission reductions: Cuts $1,130 tons of CO2 emissions per year by preventing market waste from reaching landfills.
Scalability: This pilot serves as a blueprint for Nairobi’s 53 other markets, with the potential to prevent $59,900 tons of CO₂ emissions city-wide.
Supported by the C40 UCAP Climate Action Implementation (CAI) programme, funded by the UK Government, and partnered with the Nairobi City Council, this initiative demonstrates how renewable energy can modernise urban markets and boost the livelihoods of local traders.
This video is part of a global series showcasing how UCAP CAI is driving transformational change in 15 cities across Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia. 🌍
