Clean Streets, Healthy Communities: Transforming waste management in informal settlements | UCAP CAI

For many residents in Tshwane’s informal settlements, irregular access to waste services often leads to illegal dumping or open burning. The Sustainable Waste Management Strategy for Informal Settlements is a community-led project co-designed with residents from seven regions and civil society organisations. The initiative is bringing together the City of Tshwane and C40 Cities on a project aimed at creating a circular economy that improves public health and service delivery in marginalised areas. Key project highlights: Community co-design: Built on a series of site visits and awareness campaigns to ensure solutions meet the lived realities of residents. Circular solutions: Developing business cases for organic waste diversion, specifically targeting garden waste and the Tshwane Fresh Produce Market. Policy integration: Integrating these climate-smart waste strategies directly into city policy and the Integrated Waste Management Plan (IWMP). Health and environment: Reducing the risks of disease and flooding caused by uncollected waste clogging drainage systems. The C40 UCAP Climate Action Implementation (CAI) programme, funded by the UK Government, and partnered with the City of Tshwane is proving that inclusive climate action must start with the most vulnerable communities. This video is part of a global series showcasing how UCAP CAI is driving transformational change in 15 cities across Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia. 🌍 Visit the UCAP CAI webpage: https://c40.me/3VAuZFX
