Lagos’s Waste-to-Wealth Revolution: Powering a sustainable future through innovation | UCAP CAI

In a megacity as dynamic as Lagos, climate action requires turning challenges into sustainable opportunities. Building on the Lagos Climate Action Plan, the C40 UCAP Climate Action Implementation (CAI) programme, funded by the UK Government, and partnered with Lagos State helps turn ambition into reality. This collaboration strengthens Lagos’s vision as a global leader in urban climate resilience. By integrating waste-to-wealth solutions, the city is uniting diverse departments to accelerate cross-sectoral collaboration and drive the transition to a circular economy. The official launch of the Ikosi Market Anaerobic Digester in 2026 marked a milestone for Lagos. This flagship project demonstrates how evidence-based systems can produce measurable impacts: Energy for Livelihoods: Converting 0.5 tonnes of organic waste daily into 30kWh of electricity to power market lighting, phone charging, and clean cooking. Climate Resilience: Diverting waste from landfills to avoid 9,000 tCO2e in annual emissions. Economic Opportunity: Creating 24 local green jobs and providing sustainable farming inputs through high-quality digestate. This video is part of a global series showcasing how UCAP CAI is driving transformational change in 15 cities across Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia.
