Shifting Demographics: What They Mean for Future Development
The world’s population growth tells two stories: aging populations in many countries, while in others populations are getting younger. Most countries are projected to see shrinking populations within the next 25 years due to historically low fertility rates. But Africa is bucking this trend and could benefit from a demographic dividend—an opportunity for rapid economic growth driven by a large, youthful population, if the right policies and technical support are in place.
In this episode of The Development Podcast, we explore:
- What the data tell us about global demographic shifts
- Why good data is critical for development
- How organizations like the World Bank Group and UNICEF are working together on data collection
