Farmers-led Participatory Plant Breeding (PPB): Case of Nepal
Local Initiatives for Biodiversity, Research and Development (LI-BIRD) is implementing the project ‘Strengthening farmers-led Participatory Plant Breeding (PPB) initiatives for increasing access to seeds of climate resilient and locally adapted crop varieties among smallholder farmers in Nepal' from 14 March 2022 to 31 March 2023. The project is focused on maintaining and promoting the use of farmers-led PPB varieties with the participation of PPB farmers and communities, especially with community seed banks (CSBs) of Nepal. In addition, the project has worked to bridge the gaps between CSBs and local institutions on variety registration, seed maintenance and quality seed production and build their capacity through organizing hands-on training.
This video highlights the key achievement made in varietal registration, capacity building and seed system maintenance of farmers’ varieties with the active role of the Community Seed Banks Association of Nepal (CSBAN).
