Organic vs Conventional Poultry Farming in Zambia: What We Learned | ReAct Africa

How do poultry farming practices influence antibiotic use and antimicrobial resistance? As part of the International Training Programme (ITP) with the Swedish Veterinary Agency, ReAct Africa, in collaboration with the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries and the Zambia National Public Health Institute, conducted a comparative analysis of organic and conventional poultry farming methods in Lusaka, Zambia. The study found a high reliance on antibiotics in conventional poultry farming for disease prevention, disease management, and production intensification. In contrast, organic poultry farmers relied more heavily on biosecurity measures, hygiene practices, and traditional remedies to prevent and manage disease. The findings informed awareness sessions on antimicrobial resistance (AMR), responsible antibiotic use, and enhanced biosecurity practices aimed at promoting sustainable poultry production and protecting the effectiveness of antibiotics for future generations.
