The Truth About Immigration Detention in the United States

Every year, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) subjects hundreds of thousands of people to civil immigration detention—a practice that is unjust, inhumane, and completely unnecessary. It does so under a veil of secrecy, sharing only limited, often error-prone statistics with the public. The Trump administration is poised to spend an unprecedented $170 billion on immigration enforcement, with $45 billion of that put aside to build even more immigration detention centers. This, following ICE's deadliest year in decades. ICE’s failure to regularly release accurate, complete, and accessible data to the public enables it to operate its multi-billion-dollar detention network with impunity and little oversight. Vera’s ICE Detention Trends dashboard provides an unprecedented level of detail about ICE detention populations—nationally across the facilities in which ICE detained people—on each day of the 17-year period covering October 1, 2008, through March 10, 2026. Immigration detention is entirely unnecessary. It's wrong on a policy level, and it's wrong on a moral level. Everyone in this country has the right to due process and their fair day in court.
