Good news: Maryland passed historic housing legislation

Maryland Governor Wes Moore signed the Fair Chance Housing Act into law—a historic step toward expanding access to housing for people with conviction histories. This legislation limits the use of criminal background checks in rental application processes, providing formerly incarcerated Marylanders with a more equitable chance to secure housing. Stable housing is the foundation for a thriving life—family, work, community. But for many people returning to their communities from jail or prison, a past conviction slams the door shut. Vera is proud to have helped lead the fight to expand housing access for people with conviction histories in Maryland, alongside local and national organizations including Baltimoreans United in Leadership Development (BUILD), Public Justice Center, NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Life After Release, Out for Justice, and Maryland Legal Aid. Everyone deserves a place to call home, and this legislation brings us one step closer to making it a reality. Thank you for joining us in this fight.
