Partnering with the Government of Uganda to transform contraceptive choice
Right now, MSI Reproductive Choices is meeting the reproductive health needs of millions of people who would otherwise not have access. But in the long term, national health systems should be equipped to provide these services.
For many people, accessing sexual and reproductive healthcare is primarily done through their national healthcare system. However, the services on offer can be limited, the clinics can be understocked, and the staff can lack the training required to deliver a full range of reproductive health services.
For women living in poverty, and rural communities, this can mean they’re often left behind by health systems.
That is why we have partnered with the Government of Uganda, to help bridge the public sector gap and strengthen reproductive healthcare access for all. Before our partnership, women in Uganda had few choices when it came to contraception, and one in three women looking to use contraception had no access.
Together, we identified skills shortages and co-designed a new programme to increase reproductive choice. This includes training healthcare providers on long-acting contraceptive methods, upskilling district and health facility teams on stock and supply chain management and improving the quality of health system data.
We are proud to report that more clients than ever before, nine in ten, said they received counselling on a full range of methods, and 85% opted for a long-acting contraceptive from the expanded choice available.
This partnership has increased access to quality reproductive healthcare in a collaborative and sustainable way, and that is what our health-strengthening work is all about.
