Safer Meat, Stronger Communities: Kaharey’s New Slaughterhouse
In Kaharey Displacement Camp in Doolow, displaced families and local meat vendors faced daily health and sanitation challenges due to the lack of a proper slaughterhouse. Meat was exposed to harsh weather and unsafe conditions, increasing health risks for the community.
With support from IOM and funding from the UK Government, a new community-led slaughterhouse has now been constructed — providing safe sanitation, clean water facilities, and improved livelihoods for families in the camp.
This project reflects the power of community ownership, resilience, and sustainable solutions for displaced communities in Somalia.
