Innovating across borders with Managed Aquifer Recharge
Climate change is rapidly depleting water sources in fragile, crisis-affected areas. To meet this urgent challenge, UNICEF hosted a three-day workshop from November 5 – 7, 2025, in Nairobi focused on accelerating the scaling of Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) - a powerful technique for storing and replenishing water underground.
The event served as a high-impact forum, bringing together leading experts from UNICEF, partner governments, the private sector and academia.
Organized collaboratively by the UNICEF Sustainable WASH Innovation Hub and the University of Dresden, the core goal was to cross-pollinate ideas, share crucial learnings, and develop actionable strategies for integrating MAR into national water and climate resilience plans. The discussions focused on how to rapidly deploy MAR as a sustainable, long-term solution to water scarcity, especially in the contexts where children are most vulnerable.
