This International Women’s Day, we celebrate & recognize the invaluable contributions of #olderwomen, while reflecting on their lived experiences and the challenges they continue to face. 67% of older women are in caregiving roles, yet many do not get the support themselves when they need it. Gender discrimination remains a stark reality for 17% for older women, 67% say they want to live independently, but lack the means to do so. The sex ratio among the elderly is 1065 women per 1000 men, highlighting the growing number of older women in society. Despite this, 73% of older women have no savings, and 69% do not own assets. At HelpAge India, our livelihood and financial inclusion initiatives through Elder-Self-Help-Groups support the independence and empowerment of older women. While through our Mobile Healthcare programme we ensure that they receive the much needed access to primary healthcare. But still much needs to be done to ensure that older women’s needs are addressed, and they be treated as a priority segment across multiple areas such as - #geriatric #healthcare, #digitalinclusion, #mentalwellbeing, #financialempowerment, and #livelihoodsupport.
