HelpAge India's Efforts & Experiences with Climate-related Disasters

Climate-related disasters disproportionately affect older persons, particularly in rural communities where recovery can be slower and more challenging. For over four decades, HelpAge India has worked to ensure that older persons are not left behind, providing relief, healthcare and rehabilitation support before, during and after disasters. Over the years, we recognised that sustainable recovery requires building resilience. Drawing on the principles of the National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM), we facilitated the formation of Elder Self-Help Groups (ESHGs), which have strengthened inclusion, agency and economic security among older persons—particularly rural women. Today, many ESHGs are championing climate-resilient livelihoods through sustainable farming practices, inspiring others in their communities to do the same. As we work towards a climate-resilient future, we must recognise older persons not only as those affected by climate change, but as holders of traditional knowledge and agents of change. #ClimateResilientAgeing #WEAAD2026 #HelpAgeIndia #ClimateChange #OlderPersons #DisasterResponse #Resilience #HealthyAgeing #RuralIndia #ElderSelfHelpGroups
