HIGHLIGHTS | International Panel on Inequality – First Meeting of the Founding Committee in Geneva
“The richest 1% captured 41% of the new wealth since the year 2000.” – Joseph E. Stiglitz
On 16 March, UNRISD convened the inaugural meeting of the International Panel on Inequality #IPI at the Palais des Nations, marking an important step toward building a global, science-based platform to tackle inequality. Inspired by the #IPCC model, the IPI aims to respond to growing evidence that extreme inequality is undermining democracy and economic progress.
Bringing together global leaders and experts, the discussion emphasized that inequality is a matter of policy choice — and that collective action and multilateral cooperation are key to change. Voices including Winnie Byanyima reinforced the need for stronger North–South collaboration.
We thank the Governments of South Africa, Brazil, Spain, and Norway for their strong support and all contributors for their inspiring commitment to collective action!
UNRISD was proud to host this important event and reaffirms its commitment to addressing the root causes of inequality and supporting IPI.
