The Future of the European Battery Industry | EESC CCMI Debate

On 11 June 2026, the European Economic and Social Committee’s Consultative Commission on Industrial Change, CCMI, held a high-level debate on the future of the European battery industry. The discussion focused on how Europe can strengthen its battery ecosystem, secure its industrial future and build a more competitive, sustainable and resilient value chain. Speakers addressed the challenges facing the sector, including global competition, high production costs, supply chain vulnerabilities, access to critical raw materials, affordable energy and the need for skilled workers. A key focus of the debate was the strategic potential of sodium-ion batteries. While this technology is still at an early stage of development, participants highlighted its long-term potential for energy storage, small electric vehicles and Europe’s industrial autonomy. The debate also underlined the need for a coherent European battery roadmap, stable regulatory conditions, targeted public and private investment, and a credible long-term financing plan. Participants stressed that Europe’s battery transition must combine innovation, industrial capacity, sustainability and social responsibility. The EESC advocates for an ecosystem-based approach that supports SMEs, suppliers, recycling companies and large manufacturers alike, while linking public support to quality jobs, compliance with EU legislation and respect for the European Pillar of Social Rights.
