Amboseli’s Next Chapter: Navigating the Crossroads Between Conservation and Development

Amboseli is one of Africa’s most iconic ecosystems—home to globally significant elephant populations and a long history of community-engaged conservation. Today, the landscape faces mounting pressures from expanding settlements, land-use competition, climate impacts, and rising human–wildlife conflict. In response, the Government of Kenya approved the historic transition of Amboseli National Park to Kajiado County, marking the first county-led management of a national park in the country. The African Wildlife Foundation is partnering with Kajiado County to develop the Amboseli Ecosystem Integrated Master Plan, a comprehensive blueprint linking ecological integrity with economic opportunity. The plan secures wildlife corridors, guides land-use zoning, strengthens community conservancies, and supports diversified value chains—from livestock and dairy to conservation-compatible enterprises—ensuring that local communities share in the benefits of a resilient, African-led conservation model.
