Digital Payments Meets Decent Work in Malawi's Tea Industry - Better Than Cash Alliance

As Malawi's tea sector continues to move toward full financial inclusion, a key meeting of the @Tea Association of Malawi, development partners, financial service providers (FSPs), smallholder farmers and industry leaders, revealed the ambition of all stakeholders in the sector to provide every tea estate worker and smallholder farmer with the tools to secure, convenient, and accessible digital payments—anytime, anywhere. Key outcomes of the meeting: • All FSPs present pledged their support to achieving industry-wide digitization by 2026. • Stakeholders committed to strengthening agent networks, improving financial literacy, and expanding access to digital financial services across tea-growing communities. • The meeting underscored one clear message: collaboration across sectors is key to building a more inclusive, efficient, and resilient future for Malawi’s tea industry. #ResponsibleDigitalPayments #FinancialInclusion #DecentWork #DigitalPayments The Better Than Cash Alliance is a partnership of governments, companies, and international organizations established to scale financial inclusion by transitioning economies from cash to responsible digital payments. The Alliance is hosted by the Sustainable Finance Hub, a finance and innovation platform that draws on a critical mass of UNDP expertise, initiatives, and partnerships to support mobilizing and leveraging resources for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
