Innovation for Climate Action: Digital Payments for Carbon-credit Disbursement in Oaxaca, Mexico
The Better Than Cash Alliance is leding the design of an innovative digital payments tool to address a critical challenge: ensuring that US $3.25 million in carbon credit revenues generated by Carbon Plus Mexico’s forest carbon project can be delivered to 4,500 community members in San Miguel Chimalapa, Oaxaca, in a fully traceable, auditable, and inclusive manner.
The initiative is now positioned to move toward a broader proof of concept, which will assess the feasibility of channeling funds to unbanked and underserved populations through the formal financial system. This next phase will generate insights into overcoming connectivity constraints and the limited digital services ecosystem in the region, laying the groundwork for a scalable and responsible model for future climate finance distribution.
The Better Than Cash Alliance is a partnership of governments, companies, and international organizations established to scale financial inclusion by transitioning economies from cash to responsible digital payments. The Alliance is hosted by the Sustainable Finance Hub, a finance and innovation platform that draws on a critical mass of UNDP expertise, initiatives, and partnerships to support mobilizing and leveraging resources for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
