A. Chehbouni - Managing Water Resources under ClimateUncertainty: Integrating Advanced Science...
Abdelghani Chehbouni, Associate Dean College of agriculture and environmental Sciences, Director of the Center od Remote Sensing Application CRSA UMP6P - Benguerir, MOROCCO speaks on "Managing Water Resources under Climate Uncertainty: Integrating Advanced Science
and Decision-Making".
About the webinar:
Climate change is significantly altering the hydrologic cycle, leading to increased variability and a higher frequency of extreme events such as floods and droughts. These impacts are particularly pronounced in arid and semi-arid regions, including the Mediterranean basin, where water scarcity already poses major environmental, economic, and social challenges. At the same time, analyses of global and regional climate model outputs reveal substantial uncertainties and inconsistencies in key hydrological variables, complicating risk assessment and long-term planning. This contribution explores how advances in scientific knowledge, predictive modeling, remote sensing, and artificial intelligence (AI) can be integrated to improve the management of water resources, agro-hydrologic, and eco-hydrologic systems under climate change. It highlights the potential of digital technologies to enhance monitoring, forecasting, and early warning capabilities, and to translate complex scientific information into actionable decision-support tools tailored to the needs of policymakers, water managers, farmers, and local communities. Recognizing that science and technology alone are insufficient to deliver fully integrated and prioritized solutions, the abstract emphasizes the importance of governance, societal values, and political considerations in shaping effective water and climate policies. An integrated approach that bridges advanced scientific tools with
socio-political processes is presented as a pathway to strengthen water security, build climate resilience, and support sustainable and inclusive development, while also creating opportunities for innovation, skills development, and employment for younger generations.
