Preventing Mosquito-Borne Diseases with Insecticides

Mosquitoes are more than a nuisance. They can also spread germs like West Nile virus. Mosquito control professionals apply insecticides to kill mosquitoes and prevent the spread of disease. They use two kinds of insecticides: larvicides that kill mosquito larvae and adulticides that kill adult mosquitoes. During mosquito season and especially during outbreaks of disease, adulticides are important because they kill infected mosquitoes that can bite and spread germs that make more people sick.
