Impact of Uranium and Radon in Tribal Communities
In this episode of CDC’s Environmental Health Nexus podcast, Jamie Rayman, a regional director with the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), and Paul Charp, a senior health physicist at CDC, explore uranium and radon in the environment and their effects on health in tribal communities. They examine how historic uranium mining led to ongoing contamination of soil, water, and homes, why exposure remains a concern today, and the relationship between uranium and radon. The experts also discuss how CDC and ATSDR became involved in identifying health risks, how exposure can affect health, and what is known about uranium levels in the environment.
The episode highlights current efforts to reduce exposure, including cleanup activities, community outreach, and education across the Navajo Nation. Listeners will learn practical steps to protect their health and where to find trusted resources for tribal communities.
