My ID Changed My Livelihood: Legal Empowerment Approach to Livelihood
Mohammad Tariq almost didn't get a job. When his father died of cancer, Tariq searched for a way to support his mother and sister, who lived with him in one room in a camp for members of Bangladesh's Urdu-speaking community. Without a permanent address, many organizations wouldn't hire him.
Then, once he did find a job, he had trouble getting paid. The company would only pay him by depositing his paycheck into his bank account—but Tariq couldn't get a bank account without a national ID, birth certificate, and proof of area citizenship document, which he didn't have.
With the support of Namati and partner community paralegals, Tariq obtained his birth certificate, which then made it possible for him to acquire the other documents needed to open a bank account.
Now he feels unstoppable. He held several jobs at NGOs before obtaining his Master's degree and switching to a career in banking. "My whole life changed because of this [ID]," he said.
