From Evidence to Action Scaling Integrated Screening for Health System Resilience

As chronic diseases and multimorbidity continue to rise globally, healthcare systems are facing growing pressure from fragmented care pathways that often delay diagnosis, limit prevention opportunities, and increase long-term treatment costs. In particular, interconnected cardio-renal-metabolic conditions — including heart disease, kidney disease, and diabetes — are exposing the limitations of health systems designed around single-disease management. In this session from Devex Impact House @ WHA, policymakers, clinicians, patient advocates, and health system leaders explore how integrated cardio-renal-metabolic screening can support earlier detection, improve patient outcomes, reduce health inequalities, and strengthen long-term health system resilience. The discussion also marks the launch of new health economic evidence and the policy paper, “Detect Earlier, Treat Better,” examining how integrated health checks can generate value for both patients and healthcare systems. Session highlights: 🔹 Driving National Leadership in Chronic Disease Prevention Dr. Satoshi Ezoe of the Japan Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare discusses Japan’s experience embedding preventive screening and early detection into national health systems, and the role of integrated health checks in supporting long-term health system resilience. 🔹 The Economic and Clinical Value of Integrated Health Checks Dr. Fiona Adshead of the Sustainable Healthcare Coalition explores new socioeconomic modeling on integrated cardio-renal-metabolic screening and the implications for patient outcomes, healthcare efficiency, and wider societal impact. 🔹 Translating Evidence Into Policy and Practice Bart Torbeyns of the European Diabetes Forum and Clélia-Elsa Froguel of AstraZeneca discuss how governments, healthcare systems, and partners can scale integrated screening approaches through policy, collaboration, and implementation support. Moderated by: Kate Warren, Executive Vice President and Executive Editor, Devex This conversation was hosted by Devex in partnership with AstraZeneca, and cosponsored by the European Diabetes Forum, Global Heart Hub, Global Patient Alliance for Kidney Health, Health and Global Policy Institute, Heart Foundation Australia, International Diabetes Federation, PATH, and the Sustainable Healthcare Coalition For more international development news, visit: http://www.devex.com Subscribe to the Devex YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=wwwdevexcom Follow us on: Facebook: @Devex Instagram: @devex_com LinkedIn: @Devex
