US–China relations in the wake of the Trump–Xi summit | Meia Nouwens

This year’s IISS Shangri-La Dialogue takes place just weeks after US President Donald Trump’s summit in Beijing with China’s President Xi Jinping. The result of the summit is one of tactical changes, rather than any wholesale strategic shift in the bilateral relationship, argues Senior Fellow for Chinese Security and Defence Policy Meia Nouwens. Both sides still view their relationship as one of strategic competition. Although they have agreed to deepen military-to-military communications, their respective strategic doctrines remain largely unchanged, and the risk of escalation and miscommunication remains high.
