A new step toward malaria elimination in Peru
Unitaid is proud to support the Partnership for Vivax Elimination, which is helping countries bring innovative solutions to patients faster. In Peru, evidence from the PAVE-Peru study, led by Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV) and Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia under the leadership of Prof. Alejandro Llanos Cuentas, enabled the Ministry of Health to adopt single-dose tafenoquine with G6PD testing into national guidelines for Plasmodium vivax malaria. This marks a critical step forward in simplifying treatment, reducing the risk of relapse and placing patient-centred care at the heart of malaria elimination.
This milestone demonstrates how research, partnerships, and political commitment can come together to turn evidence into action. With Peru following Brazil’s lead, momentum is building across Latin America to expand access to simpler and more effective cures for relapsing malaria.
