Community health workers tackling stigma and strengthening HIV care through THRIVE
HIV still affects millions of people worldwide, yet stigma, fear and shame continue to stop many from getting tested or starting treatment early. In this video, Christine Nakalembe, a community champion with the THRIVE project, shares how stigma in communities and health facilities creates barriers to care and why extra effort is often needed to ensure people feel accepted and supported.
Community health workers are at the heart of change. By building trust, reaching people where they are and supporting them through testing and treatment, they help close critical gaps in the HIV response. Their work is essential to preventing advanced HIV disease and reducing avoidable deaths.
Through the Unitaid funded THRIVE project, led by the Clinton Health Access Initiative in partnership with AfroCAB and Penta, we are strengthening community led approaches and expanding access to prevention, screening and treatment for advanced HIV disease.
