What is advanced HIV disease? How THRIVE is expanding lifesaving care
HIV often shows few symptoms in its early stages, which means many people do not know their status until their immune system is already severely weakened. This stage, known as advanced HIV disease, leaves people highly vulnerable to serious opportunistic infections and cancers. In this video, Dr. Veni Nabitaka explains what advanced HIV disease is and outlines the tools available to diagnose HIV, treat it and manage life threatening infections.
Despite global progress, too many people still enter or return to care at this advanced stage. In 2022 alone, 630,000 people died from AIDS related illnesses. Through the Unitaid-funded THRIVE project, led by the Clinton Health Access Initiative in partnership with AfroCAB and Penta, we are expanding access to prevention, screening and treatment for advanced HIV disease in six African countries heavily affected by HIV.
By strengthening health systems, addressing supply barriers and centering community led solutions, THRIVE aims to reduce preventable deaths and bring lifesaving care closer to the people who need it most.
