Megan L. Garcia Receives Global AI Justice Award | Exposing the Dangers of AI Chatbots
The Algorithmic Justice League honors Megan L. Garcia, Esq. with the Global AI Justice Award for her courageous advocacy addressing the harms caused by AI systems that simulate human relationships.
The unaccountable and irresponsible use of chatbots and so called AI companions, despite well documented limitations, is causing completely preventable harm. This is especially true when these systems are used by children. We salute Megan for lifting up the tragic death of her son following repeated interactions with Character AI, to warn parents about the dangers of these systems and demand accountability from AI companies that allow these harmful interactions.
Global AI Justice Award
The Global AI Justice Award is designed to honor a recipient who has experienced AI harm, taken the risk of voicing their experiences, and actively worked to prevent future harm. While there are contests and awards that recognize the efforts of researchers evaluating AI systems, this award seeks to address the fact that there are few avenues through which those impacted by AI harm are publicly celebrated and recognized for their contributions in the fight for algorithmic justice.
Recognizing Global Nominees
The nominees for this year’s award were inspired by the global conversations sparked by the Coded Bias World Tour and AJL’s international community working toward algorithmic justice.
Additional nominees honored during the ceremony include:
• Gloria, Kenya
• Ana Carolina da Hora, Brazil
• Dr. Lillian Wanzare, Kenya
Each nominee represents powerful leadership in confronting the societal impacts of artificial intelligence and advocating for responsible technology governance worldwide.
