A historic debut! πβ¨
Kigali was a huge milestone for us: the very first screening of Coded Bias on the African continent. We touched down in Kigali, Rwanda for the inaugural Global AI Summit on Africa (GAISA2025), and you could feel the history in the making.
To meet the moment, we traveled in our first-ever AJL African Diaspora Delegation and Sponsored Scholar which included:
film director Tamer Shaaban
π₯ AJL AI & music advisor Niles Luther
π± CEO of Untheckable Peter Irving
π Scholar Dr. Chinasa T. Okolo.
Our delegates weren't just there to watch; they were on the ground sharing expertise with the leaders, entrepreneurs, and scholars who convened to take in Shalini Kantayyaβs award-winning film and create #CriticalAIConversations around it. π¬β¨
Our post-screening panel was moderated by CEO of Fastagger Mutebei Kariuki and included panelists Dr. Joy Buolamwini (founder of AJL) and Dr. Abebe Birhane (principal investigator of the AI Accountability Lab). These screenings were the perfect platform to center African people and what it means for the continent to not just be a market for AI, but to be its architects. Our conversations deeply explored the humanity at the center of AI. We asked our experts and audiences to weigh in on:
βHow should creatives approach AI?
βHow can we reimagine trust in AI that drives equity and inclusion?
βHow can African youth take advantage of the AI development happening in their own back yards?
Kigali reminded us that the future of AI isn't just global; itβs deeply local. π·πΌππΏ
