Welcoming of the New President of ECOSOC, H.E. Mr. Bob Rae (Canada)
On 25th July, H.E. Mr. Bob Rae, Permanent Representative of Canada to the United Nations was elected to serve as the eightieth President of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the 2025 Session. In his inaugural address, the newly elected President set out three priorities for the upcoming year:
(i) addressing the crisis of the displacement of people around the world through promoting well-managed migration systems and adherence to international protection of the most marginalized peoples; (ii) harnessing artificial intelligence to accelerate implementation of the SDGs in a manner that is safe, responsible, inclusive, and rights-based; and (iii) deepening the Council’s engagement with international financial institutions to address gaps in financing for development and for fragile and conflict-affected countries. The incoming President emphasized that gender equality and inclusivity will serve as crosscutting themes. He committed to listening, learning, and engaging with Member States and all stakeholders alike for the Council to advance transformative policy guidance.
Vice-Presidents elected to the ECOSOC Bureau include: H.E. Ms. Maritza Chan, Permanent Representative of Costa Rica to the United Nations; H. E. Mr. Lok Bahadur Tapa, Permanent Representative of Nepal to the United Nations; and H.E. Mr. Krzystof Szczerski, Permanent Representative of Poland to the United Nations.
