Reading the river to build resilience to floods
In Nepal, extreme weather is intensifying flooding through heavier and more erratic rainfall, placing lives, livelihoods and infrastructure at growing risk. In riverine areas, excessive rainfall causes flash floods, road damage and landslides that cut off or wash away whole villages, with low-income farmers among the hardest hit.
With support from Swiss Re Foundation, Practical Action is helping communities “read the river” by bringing together local knowledge, improved river monitoring, and stronger early warning systems. This means earlier warnings, even for smaller rivers, and more time for people to act. With hands-on training and new insurance solutions, families are better prepared when water levels rise and supported as they recover, as local coordination strengthens and helps people respond more quickly.
Together, this work is helping turn knowledge into action, and preparedness into stronger flood resilience on the ground.
