World Nuclear Industry Status Report (WNISR2025)

Public Presentation in Germany Few issues in energy and climate policy are as contested as the role of nuclear power. While proponents increasingly frame nuclear energy as a climate solution - invoking a global "nuclear renaissance” and technological promises such as Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) - critics point to persistent structural challenges: high costs, long construction times, unresolved waste management, and the rapid expansion of renewable energies. Against this backdrop, the World Nuclear Industry Status Report 2025 (WNISR2025) offers a critical, independent and data-driven assessment of the global nuclear sector. The report examines the current status and long-term trends of nuclear power worldwide, including reactor construction and shutdowns, electricity generation, investment patterns and the global state of nuclear decommissioning. It places nuclear energy in direct comparison with renewable energy deployment and analyses geopolitical dependencies - including the dominant role of the Russian nuclear industry. Together with the Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management (BASE), the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, TU Berlin and the WNISR author team, the Heinrich Böll Foundation is pleased to present the key findings of the WNISR2025 to the public in Berlin.
