The 9th Global Symposium on Low Fertility and Population Ageing, held from 2–3 December 2025 in Seoul, Republic of Korea, and co-hosted by UNFPA and Korea's the Ministry of Data and Statistics, will explore the challenges confronted by countries at different stages of the demographic transition. To address the needs of older persons and ensure the viability of social systems is a timely challenge that needs to be addressed with urgency, not panic, particularly in the context of mitigating a potentially shrinking labor force. Many countries in Europe and East and Southeast Asia are at the forefront of this challenge, including the Republic of Korea, and how these countries face the new realities, will offer important lessons for those that follow behind in the demographic transition.
