Jamaica's sun-powered Fishers - Hope after hurricane Melissa

Up and down the coast of western Jamaica, loss of power to fishing villages cut the supply of seafoods to homes, businesses and shops. That's because loss of power meant loss of cold storage and loss of cold storage meant lots of seafood spoilage. If the day's catch was not sold off, fisher incomes suffered. UNDP partnered with the @AgriMinistryJamaica and @thenfajamaica to provide the first of two solar energy centres equipped with chest freezers, Starlink internet and charging stations to the fishing villages of Parottee and Galleon Beach in St Elizabeth. Watch fishers explain the challenges of power loss and what these solar centres could mean for their livelihoods.
