E12 Lessons from the APRM Review on Xenophobia | Thulani Tshefuta

In this episode of Africa Governance Voices, we are joined by former APRM South Africa National Governing Council Chairperson, Thulani Tshefuta, to reflect on the findings of South Africa’s 1st Generation APRM Country Review Report and its warnings on xenophobia, social cohesion and growing community tensions. Nearly two decades after the publication of the report, South Africa continues to grapple with recurring xenophobic violence and anti-immigrant sentiment. The discussion examines whether the warning signs identified through the APRM process were adequately addressed, the socio-economic drivers behind xenophobia, the role of leadership and institutions, and what can be done to strengthen social cohesion and nation-building. The conversation also explores cross-border migration, the African Union’s vision for the free movement of persons, and the opportunities and challenges associated with greater continental integration.
