10 Best U.S. Foreign Policy Decisions: The Louisiana Purchase
In a survey, CFR asked members of the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations what they considered to be the best and worst foreign policy decisions in U.S. history. In 1803, envoys from President Thomas Jefferson accepted a deal to purchase the entire Louisiana Territory from France for $15 million, more than doubling the size of the United States and securing control of the Mississippi River. Historians in our survey considered this decision to be one of the best in the history U.S. foreign policy.
