How access to finance is transforming livelihoods and empowering youth across the Busoga region.
One of the key goals of the Stimulating Agribusiness for Youth Employment (SAYE) Project is to empower youth to view agriculture not merely as subsistence farming, but as a viable and profitable business venture.
For many young people, however, the journey into agribusiness is often hindered by limited access to finance. Traditional financing systems have historically excluded youth, labeling them as “high risk” and “not bankable” due to challenges such as lack of collateral and limited financial literacy.
In Uganda’s Busoga region, Heifer International under the SAYE Project consortium is influencing the ecosystem to change this narrative. The project is strengthening strategic partnerships with financial institutions including banks and SACCOs to co-cocreate and refine business models to accelerate access to innovative financial services. One inspiring example is Sylvia Namukose from Namutumba District. Through support from the SAYE Project and FSD Uganda, Sylvia successfully accessed financing from Centenary Bank Uganda, enabling her to expand her groundnut production enterprise and strengthen her livelihood.
