Another setback for forests
🚨 Another setback for forests.
The EU has once again proposed delaying the Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) until December 2026. The official reason? An “inadequate IT system” that supposedly cannot handle the law’s requirements.
“The IT system is important for implementation, but it was launched for live testing over nine months ago,” said Fyfe Strachan of Earthsight. Others point to the troubling timing: the announcement came on the same day the EU signed a trade deal with Indonesia, the world’s top palm oil producer.
This regulation would require companies trading soy, cattle, cocoa, wood, coffee, palm oil, and rubber to prove their products were not grown on land deforested after December 31, 2020. Every year of delay means more rainforest cleared, more carbon released, and more Indigenous communities at risk.
Sam Lawson of Earthsight warned: “The delay effectively rewards those who have sat on their hands, while punishing the thousands of businesses which invested time and money in preparing for the law.”
Forests do not have the luxury of waiting until 2026. 🌍🌳
