Sector 8 travels temporarily to the pit

Handling a giant component: On Tuesday 4 March, a 440-tonne ITER vacuum vessel sector was transferred temporarily to the tokamak pit, where it will be stored for approximately two weeks as part of a series of handling operations designed to "flip" the sector. Its joint surfaces were repaired on one side while it was lying horizontally; now, teams must be given access to its second side. Rigging is being re-arranged so that when the sector is returned to the cradle tool and "downended" back to a horizontal orientation, its opposite side will be exposed.
