Nelson's story: Advocating for Equality and Inclusion | #MovementMakers

Nelson grew up in Ghana with two sisters in a community where girls’ education was not prioritised. At times, he would go to school while his sisters stayed home because they lacked access to sanitary pads. Nelson noticed that his sisters were not the only ones missing out: many girls missed school due to the high cost of sanitary pads, sometimes losing up to 45 days of the academic year. Determined to change this and guided by his mother’s words to always carry his sisters along, he founded the Renel Ghana Foundation. Working together with the Girls Not Brides national partnership in Ghana, Nelson and his foundation have called on the government for the removal of the sanitary pad tax, ensuring girls have equal access to education, and that no girl is left behind. This work is a step closer towards Sustainable Development Goals 4 (quality education), 5 (gender equality), and 6 (clean water and sanitation), showing how grassroots action drives global change. 🌍Nelson’s story shows us how #MovementMakers – activists and grassroots leaders – are driving global change. #16DaysOfActivism #MovementMakers #EndChildMarriage #ghana 00:00 Introduction 00:29 Growing up 01:14 Founding Renel Ghana Foundation 01:42 Girls missing school due to high sanitary pad tax 02:23 Advocacy efforts Music: No Time To Remember, Remember The Future (Shutterstock) Check out last year’s inspiring stories from the 2024 #MovementMakers: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8ToDO5LXZ7pejZrTeOsIKAzcACc2zvYO
