Meet the Women Behind the Wheels who Drive India's Public Bus Transport

Who keeps our cities moving? Here’s a hint.. it’s not just the men behind the wheels The new ITDP India–GIZ India report, Gender Inclusivity in India’s Public Transport, reveals a stark reality of lack of representation in this critical sector: Only 0.16% of driver positions are held by women—a worrying 1 in 625. While women fare slightly better as conductors at 15%, these overall figures show public bus transport is not an equal workforce. We met some of these women earlier this year when ASRTU honoured women staff from across the country on International Women’s Day. From Tamil Nadu and Kerala to Rajasthan and Delhi, their journeys remind us that their stories are not small. Infact, When we increase female representation in the workforce, we don't just achieve equality; we directly improve the safety and travel experience for every woman passenger. To close this gap and ensure participation goes up, we must actively build inclusive workplaces. Status quo is not an option.
