Just weeks after she was born, Mica lost her birth mother to COVID-19. At the same time, she faced another quiet threat: the loss of her sight. Diagnosed with retinopathy of prematurity, a condition that can lead to blindness without treatment, Mica’s future was uncertain.
But she was not alone.
Mercedes, Mica’s godmother, showed up first. She adopted Mica with open arms and an open heart. “I want to be the best mom,” she shared. “I love her with all my soul. I can’t offer her wealth, but she will never lack love.”

Because of you, Mica received timely treatment and eye drops at our partner hospital in Paraguay — care that arrived when it mattered most. Today, at three years old, Mica helps Mercedes in the kitchen, laughs with her older sister, and delights in every animal she meets.
