"We see the ocean as our ancestor."
Indigenous peoples have developed knowledge systems across millenia which deal with understanding nature. Ocean leader and Māori conservationist Mere Takoko explains how Indigenous knowledge can be defined, and why it is crucial to help conserve and restore the health of the ocean.
Recognizing the immense value of Indigenous knowledge for the protection of our ocean, the Ocean Decade aims to enhance the integration of Indigenous knowledge systems within ocean sciences, and promotes the co-design of ocean science with Indigenous peoples across the world.
