MENA Prison Forum in Berlin #5 - Libya (Audio of the Panel Discussion)

Mena Prison Forum #5 - Libya „The first step to accountability is seeing what actually happens”- with these words Phoebe Walton (Forensis) explained the core value guiding the organisation’s work. Their latest documentary “Escaping Libya’s detention Industry” was screened as part of an event co-hosted by ECCHR. The following debate unpacked the crimes against humanity committed against people on the move, focusing on how EU migration policies enable and entrench these crimes. What Allison West legally identified as a “common plan to violently prevent migration across the mediterranean”, is currently most visible in the collaboration between Italy and Libya. However, other EU-countries like Germany are equally involved: for example, by training and financing the so called Libyan Coast Guard in the framework of the European Union Naval Force Mediterranean. Or, in the words of panellist David Yambio (RiL) “The violence in Libya is also a product of Europe”.
