Empowering the Next Generation: Conversations with Youth on Financial Health

Listening to young adults is essential to building financial systems that create real economic opportunity. During a youth financial health discussion in Indonesia, convened by Women’s World Banking and H.M. Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, UN Secretary-General's Special Advocate for Financial Health, young people spoke candidly about how they navigate confidence, risk, and money in a digital-first world. Our research highlights a persistent confidence and capability gap: 1. 93% of youth borrowing is consumptive, not productive. 2. Young women save more consistently (86%), yet report lower confidence using credit and investment tools. 3. Many young people learn about money primarily through social media, not formal education. Financial access alone does not create economic opportunity. Centering youth voices helps ensure financial systems support resilience, income growth, and long-term security for the next generation.
