Social cohesion in New Zealand in 2026 | Webinar

The Rt Hon Helen Clark and economist Shamubeel Eaqub discuss the findings of the Helen Clark Foundation's second annual Social Cohesion in New Zealand report. The 2026 survey of nearly 3,000 New Zealanders shows cohesion slipping across every dimension measured — with financial stress emerging as the single biggest driver, and trust in institutions falling sharply. It also reveals some hopeful strengths in terms of New Zealanders' sense of belonging and pride, as well as high numbers of meaningful connections across different groups. Moderated by Damien Venuto, Helen and Shamubeel unpack what the report's findings mean for communities, policymakers, and the country's long-term direction, and where the most promising opportunities for action lie.
