Mauritius depends deeply on the ocean — for food security, tourism, livelihoods, biodiversity and coastal protection. Yet marine ecosystems are increasingly under pressure from climate change, coral bleaching, pollution and unsustainable human activity.
In this episode, we are joined by Dr. Daniel Marie, Director of the Mauritius Oceanography Institute, leading national efforts in marine scientific research and ocean monitoring. From coral reef conservation and fisheries sustainability to climate impacts and blue economy development, his work highlights both the vulnerability and the importance of the ocean ecosystems that sustain Mauritius.
Island Voices for Nature is a production of the UNDP Mauritius and Seychelles Multi-Country. The podcast series brings together environmental advocates, scientists, conservationists, policymakers, youth leaders and sustainability champions to discuss the present and future of our islands. Together, we explore climate resilience, ocean governance, biodiversity conservation, sustainable development and the human connection to nature.
